Is recycled polyester clothing really better for the environment? - Wildish

Is recycled polyester clothing really better for the environment?

Recycled polyester isn’t the answer to fast fashion’s carbon problem.

Wildish is challenging the fast fashion business model.

In 2021, we wrote an article about how recycled polyester isn’t the solution to fast fashion’s carbon problem.

Since then, more and more fashion brands have been turning to recycled polyester to lower their carbon footprint and reduce their impact on the environment. At Wildish, we still think this isn’t the answer.

When a plastic bottle is recycled into another plastic bottle, this process can be repeated. A garment that is made from recycled polyester ends this cycle, as once it’s become a piece of clothing, it can’t be recycled again. Almost all recycled polyester is made from PET from plastic bottles, and clothes made from more than one fibre (like a recycled polyester mix) are now regarded as unrecyclable.

Just like 4 years ago, we’re continuing to challenge the narrative around sustainable clothing by making functional products that last a lifetime from high-performance, plastic-free materials.

Our waxed cotton canvas backpacks, totes and crossbody bags are made from GOTS-certified cotton and come with a lifetime guarantee.

The cotton for our clothing range is grown and woven in India in a renewable energy-powered factory, and embroidered just down the road from the Wildish Store in North Yorkshire.

Fashion shouldn’t cost the earth, and eco-friendly fashion should be accessible to everyone. We charge honest and affordable prices - you can find cost break-downs under all our bag listings. We also use our profits to fund our Community Interest Company, The Wildish Club to help more people get outside and find community in their local area.
