Waxed backpacks are the ultimate lifestyle companion

In a world over-saturated with fashion accessories and adventure gear, it can be hard to find the perfect balance between style and durability. Is it really possible to find a bag that does it all, that can transition seamlessly from your city commute to adventures in the countryside, or even a week-long getaway abroad? Waxed canvas provides the answer.

Waxed canvas can withstand the elements and look good doing it. Not only is it a fashionable choice - it’s also much more sustainable than other plastic-based weather-proof and water resistant materials, as it contains no plastics or harmful forever chemicals.

Waxed canvas has a long and interesting history which we’ve explored in a previous blog post. In this article, discover why it makes the perfect material for roll top backpacks, cross body bags and other essential accessories for an adventurous, plant-conscious lifestyle.

So what are the key features of waxed canvas backpacks?

Waxed backpacks are amazingly water resistant. The wax-based coating on the fabric, which is often impregnated into the fibre of the canvas for added weather resistance, prevents water, dust or dirt from getting in and damaging your stuff. This makes waxed canvas bags a great choice for exploring outdoors or commuting on a rainy day.

Waxed canvas backpacks and bags are also really durable - they’re made out of thick cotton canvas which doesn’t wear out easily, and is difficult to rip or tear. This makes canvas bags ideal for use on rough terrain where you don’t want to worry about putting your bag down on rough surfaces, and also for busy city environments where you might bump into other people or brush by train or bus doors. Waxed backpacks’ durability also makes them a sustainable and economical choice, as you won’t have to replace them as frequently as other bags because they won’t wear out.

The soft canvas and often simple design of waxed canvas bags makes them really comfortable to wear too. The more you use them, the softer the canvas and webbing becomes, and the best canvas bags will eventually mould themselves to your shape. Waxed canvas also has the tendency to develop a unique patina as it ages, adding another level of interest to your bag and individuality to your style. It’s also proof of all the adventures you’ve been on!

What makes waxed canvas different to other materials?

For a start, waxed canvas is naturally derived. In most cases it’s totally biodegradable, but this doesn’t mean the material breaks down easily. The thickness of the canvas makes it just as durable as other plastic-based materials and, thanks to the nature of the woven fabric, easier to repair if your canvas bag does get damaged.

Using waxed canvas to make bags and accessories also makes them much more versatile. Not only are they appropriate for urban or countryside use thanks to their weather resistant properties, they can also be styled with almost any outfit. The weave of the cotton canvas creates a lovely texture that matches jumpers and jackets, and the waxed layer, whether shiny or matt, adds a touch of sophistication to the often simple and sleek design of waxed canvas bags that plastic or nylon bags often lack. The boxy, minimalist look of waxed cotton bags also means they go well with a sporty or utilitarian look.

As it’s an extremely versatile material, you can find bags of every style made from waxed canvas, from giant tote bags, to backpacks that fit airline carry-on restrictions, to small cross body bags perfect for festival season.

A lot of waxed canvas is also still produced in the UK. There are quite a few British bag brands that use material made, dyed and waxed in British factories - if you buy one of them, you’re having a lower impact on the environment and supporting the British economy.

How to look after waxed canvas.

Loved things last longer. Just like a favourite pair of leather boots, you can prolong the lifespan of your waxed canvas bag or backpack by properly taking care of it. If your bag gets dirty, the best way to clean it is by wiping it with a damp cloth. For more stubborn marks, try using a very mild soap or detergent with the damp cloth. Larger patches of mud or dirt can be left to dry, then brushed off using a soft-bristled brush.

If nothing you’ve tried is working, you can actually put your waxed canvas bags and accessories in the washing machine. Instructions will vary according to brand, but it’s best to set your machine to cool, with a low spin cycle. Try not to put your bag in the washing machine more than once or twice a year, and for the best results use a reproofing spray on the exterior of your bag once it’s dry.

If your bag does get scuffed or marked, don’t worry too much - it’s part of the charm of waxed canvas.
